Turkish seismologists estimated the strength of the quake to be 7.4 magnitude （USGS estimated mag 7.8). They said that a second tremor hit the region just minutes later.

History
The USGS said an equally powerful 7.8 magnitude quake that hit eastern Turkey in 1939 resulted in more than 30,000 deaths.
